There’s been talk for some time now of Porsche rolling out a flat-four engine for the Cayman and Boxster, but a report from the UK’s CAR Magazine suggests that Porsche isn’t stopping at just one. No, see, flat-four engines are like potato chips—you can’t have just one. If you’re Porsche, you’re planning for three flat-four engines because one is just not enough deliciousness. So, yeah, Porsche flat-four engines are like a bag that contains three potato chips, we guess.

CAR Magazine states that they have seen spec data on the project that suggest there will be Porsche flat-four engines with different displacements and power outputs. What’s the damage? We’re looking at a 1.6-liter that generates 210 horses, a 2.0-liter with 286 horsepower, and a 2.5-liter that bumps the power up to 360 horses.
CAR says that Porsche is all systems go on the 2.0-liter and the 2.5-liter, but that the 1.6-liter was originally planned for a “Baby Boxster” project and for later use in Volkswagen and Audi sports cars.

It seems that the Boxster, Cayman, and Cayenne will be the first to get the flat-fours, but it’s likely that Porsche will toy with putting lower-displacement four-pots in more models as emissions standards become more intense. A flat-four 911 that generates more power with better efficiency? Yeah, that’s a chip we’d happily eat.
