The 2016 Ford Focus is available in an electric model, as well as a high performance RS version

The 2016 Ford Focus RS is one of the most hotly-anticipated new cars to hit the market, and the earliest word is that it lives up to its hype in every conceivable way. The new Focus RS now has a couple of major awards to add to that word-of-mouth, most notably taking home the title of 2016 Car of the Year from Top Gear.

The 2016 Focus RS topped every other car Top Gear Magazine tested this year, taking home both the award for best hot hatch and best overall car for 2016. According to the magazine’s experts, the Focus RS won handily because of its superior handling, as well as its ability to blend “vivid personality with real practicality and serves it up at such a tempting price,” ultimately leading the magazine to declare: “We have a new hero.”

“The Focus RS really is the complete package and claims our top award ahead of other category winners costing ten times as much,” said Charlie Turner, Top Gear’s Editor-in-Chief. “It delivers accessible performance and entertainment, with looks and practicality thrown in, and proves you don’t always need to spend big money to have a huge amount of fun. When it came to the voting the decision was unanimous – the Focus RS is a hugely worthy winner of the Top Gear Car of the Year.”

Ford also topped Top Gear’s annual awards in 2013 when the Fiesta ST was named Car of the Year.

The 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang was also named the Muscle Car of the Year, and both Ford GT designer Chris Svensson and Ford Performance director Dave Pericak were among this year’s “Top Gear Heroes.”

“For new Focus RS to become Top Gear’s Car of the Year before volume deliveries get started is testimony to the car’s development team members and the RS legacy they have so successfully sustained,” said Andy Barratt, Chairman and Managing Director, Ford of Britain. “The award further heightens anticipation for this once-in-a-lifetime Ford.”
