Toyota Alabama Builds 4 Millionth Engine
The crew at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama celebrates its 4 millionth engine
Yesterday, Toyota’s engine plant in Huntsville, Alabama, produced its 4 millionth engine—a four-cylinder—destined to end up in one of seven Toyota models (Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Sequoia, Tacoma, Tundra, and Venza). While that might not seem like breaking news, it was certainly a big day for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama, and for the automaker as a whole.

The plant, which has been building engines since 2003, produces three types of engine—four-cylinder, V6, and V8. In total, the plant has manufactured 1 million four-cylinder engines, 1.3 million V6 engines, and 1.7 million V8 engines. The factory builds almost 2,500 engines every day and has an annual capacity of 710,000 engines.

“It was an exciting day,” gushed Jim Bolte, president of Toyota Alabama. “This is a testament to our team members—they are dedicated to building high-quality engines. And, whether it was the first in 2003, or the 4 millionth, the same amount of detail and craftsmanship goes into each one.”
The plant provides employment for around 1,300 workers and has expanded four times in the last 10 years. Recently, Toyota invested $230 million into the plant in order to boost production of its V6 engines.
“We look to the Alabama plant as a leader,” explained Osamu Ushio, executive vice president of operations and manufacturing, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. “Every challenge it has faced, the team there exceeds any-and-all expectations. That is why we continue to invest so much into the facility. They have what it takes to be successful—a strong group of team members who are dedicated to quality and safety. They should be very proud of the 4-millionth milestone.”
