Toyota Builds New Product Engineering Campus in Kentucky
Toyota has been all about expansion lately. Already this year, the automaker has broken ground on its new headquarters in Texas and an expansion of the Toyota Technical Center in Michigan. The latest project involves a new product engineering campus in Georgetown, Kentucky, and construction began at the site yesterday using—you guessed it—a 2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Series.
The Tundra broke ground on Toyota’s latest development during a ceremony on Tuesday, August 18th. The new center will house Toyota’s North American product engineering team upon its completion in late 2017. This project sees Toyota investing $80 million in the local economy, which is also home to Toyota’s largest North American plant (plus a lot of bees).
“Bringing Toyota’s production engineering team under one roof is a key element of Toyota’s ongoing unification of our North American operations, which includes a new headquarters in Plano, Texas and new facilities in Ann Arbor, Michigan,” explained Toyota North America CEO Jim Lentz. “The impact of these investments will be felt by our customers through improved quality, adoption of new technologies and greater value of the vehicles we produce, like the iconic Camry built here in Georgetown, Kentucky.”
Toyota has been part of the Georgetown community for almost three decades—a fact the automaker celebrated at the ground-breaking ceremony yesterday by announcing three vehicle donations to local organizations: the Salato Wildlife Education Center, Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR), and Scott United.
