Toyota and Volkswagen continue to compete for the title of world’s largest automaker, with the most global sales. Toyota has had a significant leg up on Volkswagen since the outbreak of the “Dieselgate” scandal, though Volkswagen has impressively been holding its own.

Today, however, Toyota announced that it was the “no. 1 retail brand in April 2016,” while touting its April 2016 Toyota USA sales results. In total, the automaker moved 211,125 units last month, which marks an increase of 3.8% over April of last year on a volume basis. But because there was an extra selling day in April 2016 over last year, Toyota had 0% gain on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis.

Toyota specifically saw an increase of 5% on a volume basis and 1.1% on a DSR basis, with 186,243 units sold in the US. Camry sales exceeded 34,000, while Corolla sales crested 32,000. Toyota’s light truck sales were up 13%. The Toyota RAV4 had its best April ever recorded with sales up 31.6%. Also enjoying their best Aprils on the books were the Highlander (up 9.3%) and the 4Runner (up more than 36%). The Sequoia and Land Cruiser also excelled, up 18% and 78% respectively. Rounding out Toyota’s success was the Tacoma, which saw a 16% increase over April 2015.

“The industry had its strongest April in more than 10 years, possibly a best-ever month,” explained Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. “Toyota division enjoyed its sixth consecutive month of best-ever light truck sales, helped by record Highlander, RAV4, and 4Runner sales.”

Lexus NX sales

The Lexus NX saw an 11.5% increase in sales

Lexus also did its fair share for Toyota USA, with nearly 25,000 units sold. The NX, for instance, was up 11.5%, while the RX saw a nearly 29% increase with 8,767 units sold. The LX also did well, up nearly 64% in April 2016.

“Not surprisingly, the industry’s strong sales results in April are powered by consumer demand for luxury utility vehicles,” remarked Jeff Bracken, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “On the heels of four consecutive best-ever sales months for Lexus’ LUV and crossover models, we feel confident that our range of models, especially the RX and NX, are very well positioned to meet the shifting consumer demand in the luxury market.”
