On Sunday, the first annual Automotive Diversity Volume Leadership Awards were held by the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers and HIS Automotive, Inc. The awards ceremony, which took place in Detroit ahead of the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), recognized the Toyota Corolla for having the industry’s highest number of new vehicles registered to ethnic customers in 2015.

In total, Toyota and Lexus took home 10 of the 20 awards. The automaker’s North American division general manager, Bill Fay, explained that Toyota and its Lexus luxury arm have worked hard over the years to build excellent relationships with all their customer groups—including ethnic ones. In this case, “ethnic” refers to African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans.

“On behalf of the whole Toyota team and the whole Lexus team, we’re very grateful to be recognized in the marketplace by multi-cultural, women and millennial customers that are so important to our business,” commented Fay.

The 10 remaining awards went to Honda (4), Chevrolet (3), Buick (1), Mercedes-Benz (1), and Ram (1).
