Toyota Crown 60th anniversary

The original 1955 Toyota Crown

Back in 1955, Toyota launched a new sedan in Japan—the Toyota Crown. This sedan would become a huge hit in the automaker’s home country, as well as China. While the Crown enjoyed some time in the United States beginning in 1958, it was eventually replaced with the Corolla and Camry, which were both derived from the original Crown lineup. In fact, “Camry” means “little crown,” while “Corolla” is a word for an ancient headdress made of a garland or wreath and worn as a crown.

In fact, the Crown was the first Japanese passenger car to be exported to the US, as well as Africa and Europe. While it’s not still sold here, it opened doors for the vehicles we know and love today, from the Crown-based Corolla and Camry to the newly unveiled 2016 Tacoma. The Crown is now in its 14th generation and is as popular as ever in Japan.

Nowadays, the Crown’s main sellers are the Crown Royal deluxe saloon, and the Crown Athlete sports sedan—both of which come with an efficient hybrid powertrain. In order to celebrate the Toyota Crown 60th anniversary, the Japanese automaker is introducing two limited-edition body colors—sky blue and bright green—as a way to commemorate the car that started it all for Toyota.

The limited-edition models will only be available in Japan, but you can check them out right here. They’re pretty awesome! What do you think?
