Toyota Earns 11 IIHS 2018 Safety Awards

A total of 11 Toyota and Lexus models were included in the 2018 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award winners. The new Camry outdid them all by earning the Top Safety Pick+ award, the IIHS’s highest distinction and one much harder to earn in 2018.
This year, only 15 vehicles met the stricter criteria for the TPS+ award and another 47 earned the regular TPS (without the +) award.
To qualify for either award, vehicles must earn the a good rating in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint evaluations, as well as earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
Scoring an acceptable rating for headlight visibility is enough for getting on the Top Safety Pick list but no longer for earning the coveted TPS+ award, which now requires a good rating unlike last year. To qualify for the TPS+ award, vehicles must also earn an acceptable rating in a new passenger-side small overlap front test introduced by the IIHS for 2018. If the pattern holds, they’ll have to score a good rating next year to make the 2019 list.
The 2018 Toyota Camry was one of only 15 vehicles to meet the criteria for the TPS+ award, while six other Toyota models and four Lexus models qualified for the regular TPS award, including the Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Prius, Prius Prime, RAV4, and Highlander.
