The new Toyota plant in Mexico would produce the Corolla sedan

Toyota has been on quite a roll with its North American sales, and thanks to increased demand for its reliable, if slightly drab, vehicles, the automaker is expanding its production capabilities and opening its first passenger car assembly plant in Mexico. Talks are currently being held with government officials in the central state of Guanajuato regarding a plot of land that would allow Toyota to build a large plant now, and still have room to expand in the coming years.

While there’s no official word yet from Toyota, Reuters reports that the plant would produce the popular Corolla sedan beginning in 2019. Although the automaker does have a plant in Baja California that produces the Tacoma truck, the plant in Guanajuato would be the brand’s first passenger car-producing plant in Mexico.

“We are always evaluating our production capacity in Mexico, and in North America generally, to keep it in line with local market demand, but no such decision has been made at this time,” said Toyota spokesman Itsuki Kurosu in an interview with Reuters.

With the opening of this new plant, Toyota will be the last mass-market automaker to open a major production hub in Mexico.
