In many overseas markets, the Toyota Fortuner SUV is a big hit. Based on the tough and tested Hilux pickup truck, the Fortuner has the reputation of being ready for anything—from city driving to adventures off the beaten path. Now, Toyota has announced the addition of a TRD (Toyota Racing Development) model to the Fortuner lineup in Thailand, with expansion into other countries a possibility.

Last summer, Toyota unveiled the second-generation Fortuner at separate events in Sydney, Australia; and Bangkok, Thailand. The new Fortuner TRD Sportivo model will be based on the all-new Fortuner, adding things like TRD-tuned suspension, 20-inch wheels, and optimized shocks and springs. The Fortuner TRD Sportivo comes in a white color (as with other TRD models) with a matte black roof, though an all-black exterior will also be available.

Inside, the Fortuner TRD Sportivo offers a massive 11-speaker JBL sound system, leather upholstery in black and red, push-button start, and faux carbon Kevlar trim. A seven-inch touchscreen includes navigation, to prevent the driver from getting lost, even when in the depths of the country.

That’s some good TRDing there, Toyota

The Toyota Fortuner TRD Sportivo will come with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine good for 177 horsepower and a whopping 332 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, though four-wheel drive is also available for extra cost.

TRD offers three models here in the US—Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner—and rumor has it that a TRD RAV4 might be on its way at some point. Drivers who want to add sportiness to vehicles without an available TRD model can purchase parts separately in order to spice up any of Toyota’s available models.
