Everything is bigger in Texas—at least that’s how the saying goes. Texans are never afraid to say what they think, and what they think is that the Toyota Highlander is pretty incredible. Texans’ love for this SUV became apparent when the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) named the Toyota Highlander Activity Vehicle of Texas, solidifying its place on the Lone Star State’s favorite list.

The award was given at TAWA’s annual Auto Roundup event, held at Texas Motor Speedway at the end of April. Every year, TAWA members gather to test drive a selection of vehicles, and vote for their favorites over 17 different categories. The writers were suitably impressed with the recently redesigned Highlander, which offers three rows of seats without compromising comfort and space. Under the hood, the midsize SUV boasts a 3.5-liter V6 engine that pumps out up to 270 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, making getting up to speed a breeze. A slightly more efficient 2.7-liter motor delivers 185 hp while offering an impressive 25 mpg highway.

Texans who prefer their SUVs to be a little more eco-friendly have the option of choosing the Highlander’s V6-powered Hybrid Synergy Drive engine, generating 280 hp and returning an estimated 28 mpg highway.
