2015 was a record year in the American automotive industry, with 17.5 million cars and trucks purchased. This number broke the previous record, which was set 15 years ago, and left automakers feeling confident moving into the New Year. On top of the list of automakers was Toyota, which was named 2015’s best-selling retail brand. And while the company is Japanese, millions of Toyota models sold in 2015 were built right here in North America.

In fact, the Japanese automaker built more than 2 million vehicles in North America in 2015—more than in any previous year. In total, Toyota produced 2,035,028 vehicles, plus 1,933,702 engines. The reason for this outstanding figure was increased demand for American-made models like the Corolla, Camry, Tacoma, and RAV4. This demand was fueled by a healthy economy and low fuel prices.

“Our products are a direct reflection of our team members’ dedication and talent,” explained Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota North America.  “Each vehicle that rolls off the line is an example of our commitment to safety, quality, value and above all our relentless focus to exceed customers’ expectations.”

In 2015, Toyota’s Kentucky plant started building the Lexus ES 350—a feat which brought 750 new jobs to the plant. Additionally, Toyota‘s Indiana plant produced its 4 millionth vehicle, and its Texas plant began building the redesigned 2016 Tacoma. Toyota Mississippi produced its 500,000th Corolla, while the Alabama plant built its 4 millionth engine after boosting V6 production.

Currently, Toyota builds 14 models right here in North America: the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, RAV4, Scion iA, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Lexus RX 350, Lexus ES 350, Venza, and Yaris.
