We don’t often hear reports of automotive sales figures in Botswana. But the southern African nation has been a real success story for Toyota in the last 10 years. Since 2005, vehicle ownership in Botswana has more than doubled, and the most popular automaker by far has been Toyota.

In fact, a massive 48% of vehicles registered in Botswana in 2014 were Toyotas. The next biggest automakers were Mazda, with 7%; Volkswagen, with 6.4%; and Nissan, with 3.1%.

In total, there were 436,000 vehicles on the road in Botswana last year, which equates to 210 per 1,000 citizens. That might not sound like a lot in American terms, but for Botswana that number is significant.

Toyota sells its popular Hilux pickup truck, as well as the Land Cruiser, Prado, FJ Cruiser, Corolla, Fortuner, and more in the southern African nation.
