At the beginning of every month, automakers look back on the previous month’s sales figures and celebrate or commiserate accordingly. For Toyota, May 2014 was definitely something worth celebrating. The Japanese automaker saw a 17 percent increase from May 2013, with sales totaling 243,236 units.

These impressive Toyota May sales numbers were thanks in large part to some key players from Toyota’s brands. Toyota division sold 216,315 units, with the Camry up 26 percent for sales that almost totaled 50,000, while its smaller sibling, the all-new Corolla, grew 30.8 percent to achieve its best sales month since August 2009. In addition, sales of Toyota hybrids were up nine percent, with the Prius leading the pack with 23,793 total sales.

Toyota’s luxury Lexus division finished May with a total of 26,921 units sold, which was up 21.1 percent on a raw-volume basis over last May.

“Industry sales in May soared as consumer confidence improved and demand for new vehicles continued to strengthen,” said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. “Toyota had its best month in six years led by strong Camry, Corolla, and Hybrid sales.”

We look forward to seeing what Toyota has in store for us for the remainder of 2014.
