Toyota Mirai’s Fuel Economy Likely to Be Around 60 MPGe
Toyota’s been in the news a lot in the last couple of days, as details trickle out regarding its Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. Here’s what we know: Toyota wants this vehicle to be a pioneer of the fuel cell vehicle industry, the vehicle will come with the ability to power your home (at least in Japan), and now, we have a fairly educated estimate of what numbers the vehicle will yield when it comes to fuel economy.
Using their impeccable math skills (certainly better than anything we could do here at The News Wheel), AutoBlogGreen has come up with a pretty realistic guess as to what the Toyota Mirai’s fuel economy ratings will look like. In order to come up with their estimates, the mathematical geniuses looked at two hydrogen-powered vehicles already rated by the Department of Energy (DOE)—the 2015 Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, and the 2014 Honda FCX Clarity.
The Tucson can carry 5.64 kg of hydrogen, and its range is 265 miles. Divided up, that comes out to 47 MPGe, and the DOE rates the vehicle at 49 MPGe combined. Similarly, the FCX Clarity has a range of 231 miles and can carry 3.92 kg of hydrogen, which works out at 59 MPGe—the exact same number touted by the DOE.
Following this logic, AutoBlogGreen figured out that the Toyota Mirai can carry 5 kg of hydrogen and has a range of 300 miles. After some hard mathing, the number came out to be 60 MPGe.
Obviously, this estimate of the Toyota Mirai’s fuel economy is in no way official, but it’s certainly interesting to see what we can expect once the DOE gets around to giving the fuel-cell car a rating. If AutoBlogGreen is correct, that’s pretty impressive, and those numbers would certainly make drivers seriously consider turning to the fuel-cell vehicle—especially given the fact that Toyota will offer up to three years of free hydrogen fuel to drivers who buy or lease the Mirai when it’s released in the US in 2015.
