Introduction
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is a midsize crossover SUV that is built on the Toyota Camry platform. The Highlander Hybrid uses Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology combined with the automaker’s 3MZ-FE 3.3-liter V6 engine, offered in either AWD or FWD trims.
Early History
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid was first introduced to the public at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and was available for purchase in 2005 as a 2006 model year. The power steering pump, the water pump, and the AC compressor were electronic versions, unlike its non-hybrid counterpart. The Highlander Hybrid includes Toyota’s Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management and Electronically Controlled Brake Systems.
Recent History
The Toyota Highlander Hybrid was issued an update for the 2011 model year, seeing some styling changes, as well as an upgraded 3.5-liter 2GR-FXE V6 – which increased net power by 10 hp. The ToyotaHighlander Hybrid is now rated at 28 mpg combined, and can be run for short distances on an electric-only powered mode.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid was the first available seven-seat hybrid, showing the world that hybrids don’t necessarily have to be small.
