Vehicles like the groundbreaking Mirai helped Toyota earn its place as one of the globe’s most innovative companies in 2015

For the last 10 years, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has conducted a survey exploring the innovation of companies in various fields across the globe. For 2015, Toyota was ranked in sixth place overall, and was one of only two traditional automakers to feature in the top 10 (BMW appeared in seventh place).

For the study, BCG surveyed thousands of senior-level executives and compiled a list based on its findings. Since this is the 10th year of the study, BCG created an interactive guide showing the dynamism of the survey over time, showing that Toyota has been one of the top 10 most innovative companies eight years out of 10. In the survey’s first year, Toyota finished a still-impressive 14th, while in 2012 the automaker dropped from the top 10 briefly with an 11th place listing.

In the 10 years of the survey, Toyota finished in third place for three years in a row, from 2007 – 2009. In comparison, seventh-place BMW has only featured in the top 10 twice.

The 2015 survey shows that Toyota has always been deeply concerned with innovation, and even managed to keep its place in the survey through the tumultuous times the auto industry experienced during the Great Recession.
