2013 Toyota PriusTakeshi Uchiyamada is the father of the Toyota Prius, he is also the Chairman of the Toyota Motor Corporation. At a recent event in Washington, D.C., he was giving remarks before the Economic Club and predicted the future of hybrids.

He said, “Some people say hybrid vehicles such as the Prius are only a bridge to the future. But we think it could be a long bridge and a very sturdy one. There are many more gains we can achieve with hybrids.”

He continued by saying with each generation of the Prius, Toyota has been able to get a ten percent improvement in fuel efficiency. The company is currently working on the fourth generation and Uchiyamada said they want to beat that ten percent record.

Worldwide, Toyota has sold over 5 million hybrid cars. Uchiyamada challenged the auto industry to sell 5 million in the U.S. alone by 2016. He also said he was excited by Toyota’s venture into hydrogen fuel cell technology.
