Toyota Prius Lineup Receives New Nomenclature

2018 Toyota Prius Four Touring

The Toyota Prius is ditching the naming structure it has used since 2010, forgoing the numbered trims — One, Two, and Three — for the more conventional nomenclature the rest of the Toyota vehicle lineup already uses — L, LE, and XLE.

According to CarsDirect, the changes will go into effect when the new Prius goes into production in December. The current Prius Two Eco will be renamed the Prius L Eco and become the new base model. Though pricing is not available at the moment, the 2018 Prius Two Eco is $1,700 more expensive than the base model and offers about four extra miles per gallon.

The Prius Two will become the Prius LE, and the Prius Three will be renamed to Prius XLE. At the top of the line, the Prius Four will become the Prius Limited, completing the swap over to regular Toyota nomenclature. This does mean the Touring variants for the Prius will be discontinued, though CarsDirect believes the Advanced Technology Package will be available on the XLE.

Trade In: What’s your car worth?

The current Prius’ naming structure has its roots in 2010, when Toyota began to use Roman numerals for the trims. It switched to spelled-out numbers in 2012 when the Prius v was launched, which has since been discontinued. The more popular Prius c is already using Toyota’s conventional nomenclature.

As far as shakeups go, however, that’s about all you can expect from the new 2019 Toyota Prius. It will continue to benefit from excellent fuel economy and the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety technologies, but there’s once again no sign that Toyota will add support for Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or even Alexa, which other Toyota vehicles are now receiving.
