The new Toyota Prius Prime was named the 2017 World Green Car today at the 2017 New York International Auto Show. The car was selected for the award by an international jury panel of 75 top-level automotive journalists from 23 countries around the world.

The Prius Prime was one of 12 new global vehicles entered for the award, which took multiple factors into consideration ranging from tailpipe emissions and fuel consumption to major advanced power plant technology “aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle’s environmental responsibility.”

This isn’t the first time Toyota earns a World Green Car Award or even just a World Car Award. The Toyota Mirai fuel cell car was named the 2016 World Green Car just last year and the Toyota Prius was not only named a “Top Three in the World” finalist for the 2010 World Green Car Award but also for the 2010 World Car of the Year.

Other “Top Three in the World” finalists include the Toyota GT86 for 2013 World Car of the Year, the Toyota iQ for 2009 World Car of the Year, and the Toyota Harrier Hybrid for 2006 World Green Car.

The Toyota Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid version of the Toyota Prius that many believe will help make that crucial bridge between hybrid and all-electric vehicles and motivate more buyers than ever to go green.

“It is a great honor to see the Prius Prime named World Green Car,” said Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager of Toyota division. “For global automakers like Toyota, this award is a testament to our focus on developing products that both stir the emotions and meet the mobility needs of our customers in all corners of the world.”
