2016 Toyota CES map generational system

As 2015 draws to an end, we’re gearing up for the best season of all—auto show season. And while it’s not exactly an auto show, the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) promises plenty of exciting displays from our favorite automakers. We’ve already learnt that the Ford GT will be the Official Vehicle of CES 2016, and now we can also reveal what to expect from Japanese automaker Toyota at the show.

While other automakers use LiDAR-equipped vehicles to map roads for their autonomous vehicles, Toyota plans to equip its future autonomous cars with cameras and GPS devices to help gather road images and vehicle positional information. Then, using a cloud system, the information will be uploaded, pieced together, corrected if necessary, and compiled into a real-time map. Toyota says this should help reduce the system’s margin of error to just 5 centimeters on straight roads (maps created using LiDAR-equipped vehicles have a 10- to 20-centimeter margin of error).

Initially, use of this system will be limited to expressways until it becomes more widespread. But once autonomous vehicles become more popular on the road, Toyota will expand the system to cover ordinary roads and assist in hazard avoidance.

The technology will be on display at the 2016 CES from January 6–9, 2016.
