Toyota’s North American division reported March 2018 sales of 222,782 vehicles, up 3.5% compared to the same period last year. Toyota-branded vehicles, excluding Lexus, did even better with 195,750 sales to mark a 4.5% increase on a volume basis and a 0.8% increase on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis.

For the first quarter of the year, Toyota is up 7.4% on a volume basis and 4.6% on a DSR basis compared to 2017, giving the automaker a good shot at reclaiming its title of best-selling car brand in the world, which Volkswagen snatched last year and the one before.

Diving into the details reveals a story we’ve seen before: cars took a backseat to “light trucks” (that is to say SUVs, crossovers, and pickup trucks), which were up a whopping 9.8% on a DSR basis. The Highlander, RAV4, Tacoma, and Tundra performed especially well, a consistent trend throughout the past year, and though cars were down 9.4% overall on a DSR basis, that’s not to say they did poorly; in fact, the Camry continued to be the best-selling vehicle in Toyota’s lineup with 35,264 units sold, just up on the RAV4’s 34,937.

“Strong Camry sales in March, combined with continuing record light truck results, paved the way to our best first-quarter in 10 years,” said Jack Hollis, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division.  “With the all-new Avalon and Corolla Hatchback on sale this spring, we’re heading into the second quarter with confidence that our sales momentum will continue.”
