Toyota had quite an impressive start to the year, gaining over 13% in sales year-over-year in both January and February of this year. Now, the numbers are in for March, and Toyota showed a 4.9% overall increase in sales when compared to March of 2014. Not quite as impressive as 13%, but impressive nonetheless.

The 4.9% increase encompasses sales for all three brands under the Toyota umbrella—Toyota, Lexus, and Scion. For Toyota division, March saw a 4.4% increase on a volume basis, and 8.5% increase on a daily selling rate basis. This was largely thanks in part to Toyota light truck sales, which went up 11.5%, setting a new March record. The superstar Camry sedan saw sales north of 40,000 units, while the Corolla set a March record with sales of 35,532 units for a 19.7% increase.

Other notable Toyota models in March included the RAV4 (27.9% increase), the 4Runner (22.5% increase), the Sienna (16.6% increase), and the Tundra and Tacoma trucks (5.2% increase combined).

“Strong March sales capped the auto industry’s best first quarter in 13 years,” commented Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager.  “Our pickups, SUVS and Sienna minivan all posted good gains in March and contributed to a record light truck first quarter.  March was more than a truck story, however, as Camry and Corolla combined for sales of over 75,000.”

Can Toyota continue its sales momentum into the second quarter of 2015? Time will only tell.
