Toyota’s April sales totaled 203,329 vehicles in the United States, a 1.8% year-over-year increase from the year prior. In all, Toyota Division accounted for 177,453 units—up 0.5%—and Lexus added 25,876 units—up 11.7%.

“Light truck sales have carried the auto industry to its best start in 15 years,” said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. “The demand for crossover SUVs is off the charts and both the RAV4 and Highlander set April records.”

Toyota’s utilities and trucks more than accounted for the overall decline of the brand’s cars, posting year-over-year increases of 8.9% and 8%, respectively. The RAV4 led the way for utilities with a 21.7% increase at 22,914 units, followed by the Highlander with 13,763 units (up 10%) and Sienna with 11,353 units (up 2%).

Lexus’ sales were up 11.7% thanks to strong movement from the CT, IS, GX, and the new RC and NX.

“Lexus is off to its best start ever,” said Jeff Bracken, Lexus group vice president and general manager.  “We’re bullish on the industry as we head into the summer selling season and that goes double for the luxury segment.”
