Fastening your seatbelt can greatly reduce your risk of crash-related injury or death

There’s a reason why seat belts exist. They help reduce serious crash-related injuries and deaths by about half. But many drivers—particularly young ones—are neglecting to wear seat belts. In an attempt to increase seat belt usage, Toyota has developed an app called “Seat Selfie,” which is designed to encourage road safety habits in Asia as part of the Safety Leaders campaign.

The app was developed in collaboration with Hakuhodo i-studio and Yamasaki Lab of the University of Tokyo. It works by scanning a car seat selfie uploaded by the user, and doing one of two things. If the user is wearing a seat belt in the selfie, the app will upload it to social media. If no seat belt is visible, the app will nudge the user until he or she buckles up.

In order to encourage use of the Seat Selfie app, Toyota will offer users the chance to win a trip for two to the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.

“Belting up is such a simple and easy action but it can save lives and reduce injuries from collision,” explained Hao Tien, senior vice president, Toyota Motor Asia Pacific. “A safer road environment can be achieved if everyone does their part to keep themselves safe and look out for other road users.”

The app will be available to drivers in India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Brunei, Vietnam, Myanmar, and the Philippines. It’s available for Apple and Android devices and works with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Line.
