NASCAR Xfinity Series Supra

For the first time since joining the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2007, Toyota will change racing car models. The iconic Supra sports car, which is believed to be making its production debut sometime in the first half of 2019, will replace the Camry and make its competitive debut at the Feb.16 season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

NASCAR drivers Kyle Busch and Christopher Bell, alongside Toyota officials, had the honor of unveiling the new Supra racing car at the speedway last week. It is jointly built by Toyota’s TRD USA division and Calty Design Research and features design cues borrowed from the Gazoo Racing Supra concept that made waves at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year.

The Xfinity Supra retains the pointy nose and exterior lighting designs that were originally shown on Toyota’s 2014 FT1 Concept, though underneath it is everything you would expect from a NASCAR competitor: a carbureted pushrod V8, spec tube-frame chassis, and four-speed manual transmission.

In fact, even on the outside the car hardly resembles the Supra set for launch next year — but even just for the sake of marketing, any car bearing the Supra name is bound to generate a lot of buzz.

The Camry, though not as prestigious in name, should nonetheless be recognized for its achievements in the series before the Supra replaces it. Since 2007, it racked up 142 wins and four manufacturer’s titles — and so far this year Toyota drivers have already scored nine Cup Series wins, including Erik Jones’ very first just last weekend.
