The stars of Back to the Future discuss what the movie got right

If you’re a child of the ’80s, the date October 21, 2015, likely stands out in your mind. That’s because next Wednesday is the exact date to which Doc Brown and Marty McFly traveled in their time-traveling DeLorean in Back to the Future Part II. The date is doubly important this year because it marks the official release day of Toyota’s first production fuel-cell vehicle, the 2016 Mirai.

To celebrate the Mirai’s release and Back to the Future Day, Toyota has made a teaser film depicting Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown) and Michael J. Fox (Marty McFly) sitting in a diner, discussing which predictions the movie got right. The 43-second clip offers a glimpse at what the automaker is planning for the Mirai’s release day, as the video instructs viewers to “Watch the full film on October 21 2015.”

“Over the years we’ve had a lot of fun predicting which Back to the Future fictional 2015 technology would arrive by the real year,” reminisced Michael J. Fox. “Now that we’re a week away, I think fans are going to have a good time with what Toyota sees as a true possibility for transportation. It’s actually really cool.”

“This Back to the Future-inspired milestone has taken 30 years to arrive, and Toyota has been developing hydrogen fuel cell technology almost that long,” explained Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager.  “There’s no better way to generate excitement for a turning point in automotive history than with a film that celebrated the possibilities of the future.”

On top of the film and Mirai release, Toyota has another surprise planned for October 21st. In Back to the Future, Marty McFly dreamed of a souped-up Toyota truck. The automaker plans to unveil a real-life recreation of that truck in the form of a Tacoma in multiple yet-to-be-announced places.

Stay tuned to see the full film and more on October 21st.
