Everyone remembers that one magical day during their teenage years where they were finally able to drive a car without parental supervision—the rush of freedom, the excitement of new adventures, the pride you feel for your crappy ’95 Volvo. Getting your driver’s license is a major milestone for not only every teenager, but also for their parents.

When a teenager first receives their driver’s license, the succeeding year is one of the most dangerous of their lives. Toyota understands this and has introduced Toyota TeenDrive365 to help families get through that first dangerous year of teen driving. The program, which combines the teen driving programs and resources Toyota has developed over the past decade, aims to increase the conversations between parents and teens through online resources, expert advice and tips, along with local events and social media.

One of the key tips the TeenDrive365 program offers: Parents should model good driving habits for their kids, an idea supported by Toyota’s Collaborative Safety Research Center, who performed a study that found a connection between how parents and their teens drive.

“We like to say that driver’s education begins the day a parent turns their child’s car seat around to face forward,” said Dr. Tina Sayer, Toyota Collaborative Safety Research Center Principal Engineer and teen safe driving expert. “It’s so important that parents understand that the actions they take and the expectations they set for young drivers each day are powerful factors in encouraging a lifetime of safe behavior behind the wheel.”
