After weeks of speculation and leaked images, Toyota revealed the next generation of its Hilux pickup truck today in Bangkok, Thailand, and Sydney, Australia. The new Hilux is updated all around, and Toyota seems to have placed more emphasis on the concept of toughness than any other facet of the truck.

According to Toyota managing officer and executive chief engineer behind the Hilux, Hiroki Nakajima, “Our entire development concept was centered on ‘redefining toughness’. We aimed to make the new Hilux ‘tougher’ based on a much broader interpretation of that word. The message we want to deliver to our customers is embodied in our slogan for the vehicle: ‘A New Era for Pickup. Every Inch a Hilux.'”

The new Hilux will be offered in single cab, double cab, and extra cab configurations, and with either a regular bed or an extended bed. The newly-revealed engine option is a 2755 cc diesel that is said to produce 177 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. It’s expected that the Hilux will also be offered with a 2.4-liter turbodiesel, a 2.7-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder, and a 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine. Transmission options will include a standard six-speed manual and an automatic.

On the inside, the 2016 Hilux is offered with a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and driver assistance tech includes push-button start, trailer sway control, downhill assist control, and uphill assist control.
