Toyota Unveils Supra Concept

It’s finally happened: the next-generation Toyota Supra, in the guise of a racing concept, has made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, as Toyota had teased last month.

The GR Supra Racing Concept (GR stands for “Gazoo Racing”) revives one of the most celebrated names in the history of Toyota, and though it still isn’t a surefire confirmation of an upcoming production model, it can almost certainly be interpreted as one.

First appearing in 1978, the Supra was initially a more powerful version of the Celica. By its fourth generation, which launched in 1993, the front-engine, rear-wheel drive GT sports car had become an icon. It competed in IMSA sportscar racing in the 1980s, twice at Le Mans in the 1990s, and when it retired in 2002, it had been the automaker’s most powerful production model.

It took over 15 years, but now the Supra is back. The GR Supra Racing Concept is once again a front-engine, RWD car, and features all of the hallmarks of a racer: a massive rear wing, extensive use of lightweight composite materials, a low-riding chassis with a huge diffuser, Michelin racing tires, and a competition-focused dashboard.

Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, the international umbrella organization for Toyota’s global sporting program, the GR Supra Racing Concept will also be featured in a new update to the Gran Turismo Sport video game in April.

The engine(s) that will power the Toyota Gazoo Racing remains a matter of hot debate, as despite having finally unveiled the long-awaited concept, Toyota has yet to reveal any details about its powertrain. It looks like we’ll have to wait on that front.
