Trucks, SUVs Lead Ford to 2.2% Sales Increase in May

Ford Motor Company sales were on the upswing in May, increasing 2.2% with a total of 241,126 vehicles delivered. Ford brand sales were up 2.1% with a total of 230,838 vehicles delivered and Lincoln Motor Company sales increased 4.9% at 10,288 vehicles delivered.

Overall retail sales were down 0.8% at 158,282 units delivered, while fleet sales were up 8.4% at 82.844 units. While car sales continued to struggle—down 10% at 60,565 units—truck and SUV sales more than made up the difference with respective increases of 9.4% and 4.3%. Average transaction prices were also up on the month, increasing $2,100 per unit.

“May marked a standout month for Ford brand SUVs, with a May record 74,910 SUVs sold,” said Mark LaNeve, vice president, US, Marketing, Sales, and Service. “Plus, we continued to see strong F-Series performance, with sales and share rising this year, along with average transaction pricing. In May, overall F-Series sales were up double digits and transaction prices grew $3,300 per truck.”

For the Ford brand, truck sales were up 9.4% at 99,237 units delivered, led by a 12.8% year-over-year increase for the F-Series at 76,027 units—a 13-year best. Through five months, F-Series sales have increased by 8.5% at 351,965 units.

Ford-branded SUV sales were up 4.2% at 74,910 units. Explorer sales increased 20.7% at 22,715 units, Expedition sales increased 13.9% at 5,758 units, Edge sales were up 11% at 13,752 units, and Flex sales were up 7.1% at 1,938 units.

Ford car sales fell 10.9% at 56,691 units. Ford delivered five of its GT supercars in May and the only other vehicles in the lineup to see an increase were the Taurus at 23% and Police Interceptor Sedan at 18.3%.

Through May, Ford’s total sales are down 3.6% at 1,073,123 vehicles. Ford brand sales are down 4% at 1,026,061 units, and Lincoln sales are up 5.8% at 47,062 units.
