For years we’ve endured cruel rumors that the Genesis Coupe—which debuted back in 2008—could be getting an upmarket V8 engine. But despite the appeal of Hyundai’s affordable, rear-wheel drive coupe receiving the same engine as the Genesis sedan, our dreams haven’t come true.

Now, with its second generation on the way, there might actually be a ray of hope shining down on the hood of the Genesis Coupe.

But the heavenly message isn’t the announcement of a V8–it’s the possibility that a twin-turbo engine could be headed to the redesigned Genesis Coupe.

Rumors of Hyundai’s Plan for the Next Genesis Coupe Engine

According to The Korean Car Blog, the 2017 model year Hyundai Genesis that’s currently in development could be receiving an update to its current 3.8-liter V6 engine.

The 3.3-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder GDi engine Hyundai has been developing was displayed at the Chicago Auto Show. While it may have been deemed too “sophisticated” for the Genesis Coupe at first, word is that the Lambda II is being tested in production form.

The twin-turbo GDi is capable of producing an estimated 365 horsepower and 379 lb-ft of torque—and that’s a conservative assessment. While it’s not much of an improvement over the 348 horsepower of the current naturally-aspirated 3.8-liter, it’s an increase of nearly a third over the current 295 lb-ft of torque.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has a strong aftermarket potential, and with Hyundai’s presence heightening at tuner shows like SEMA, an appealing motor could finally bring the underrated model into the big leagues.
