Among Mazdas, the top two spots go to the CX-5 (which is the top seller by far), and the Mazda3 (which has taken a hit due to the surging popularity of crossovers).

According to Good Housekeeping, there is a good reason for these two to stand on top, as its editors have given both the 2018 CX-5 and the 2018 Mazda3 the award of 2018 Best New Car in the compact crossover SUV and compact categories, respectively.

These annual awards are conducted by the Good Housekeeping Institute in collaboration with Car and Driver, with whom they test and rate more than 100 new vehicles, eventually cutting three quarters of their number from the running to arrive at the 25 Best New Cars.

Of the pair of Mazdas, Laurie Jennings, director of the Good Housekeeping Institute, said, “The Mazda vehicles really stood out when you look at the number of features you get for the price point. We were impressed by the exterior and interior styling, and it’s clear their design team worked hard to eliminate as much visual noise as possible. You also get a much quieter ride, which is great for parents with kids in the backseat or people who log a lot of miles on the highway.”

Although this is the first of these awards for the CX-5, the Mazda3 already carries a Good Housekeeping Best New Car Award, just for 2016, though both vehicles have recently undergone upgrades – the CX-5 was completely redesigned, going on sale last spring, and the Mazda3 received new standard features in all trims for the 2018 model year, particularly the brand’s automatic braking system, called Smart City Brake Support.
