It was announced today that Honda has the most top-safety rated vehicles in America, entrenching the native Japanese brand as an adopted American product. How deep does that connection go? Honda also announced just last week that 2013 marked the first time in company history that American Honda became a net exporter, meaning that it exported more vehicles last year than it imported from Japan.

In 2013, Honda exported 108,705 U.S.-made Hondas and Acuras; meanwhile, it imported 88,537 vehicles from Japan, making its net export figure +20,168. Honda enjoyed record production tallies in North America (1,781,213 units) and the United States (1,309,917 units) during 2013.

“Achieving net exporter status is a natural result of our commitment and investment in the U.S. and North America,” said Tetsuo Iwamura, president & CEO of Honda North America, Inc, in the automaker’s press release. “The achievement of this tremendous milestone is a result of the efforts of the tens of thousands of associates in America who develop and produce our vehicles and those who manage the export of these products to customers in global markets.”

Thanks to more than $2.7 billion in investments in the last three years, almost 95 percent of the units sold within the United States are North American- and U.S.-made Hondas and Acuras.

The tally of U.S.-made Hondas and Acuras represented a 7.4 increase over the same numbers from 2012; North American-made models increased by a total of 5.3 percent year-over-year. Honda was the only auto manufacturer in the world during 2013 to have three different models—the Honda Civic, CR-V, and Accord—sell more than 300k units in the United States; all three lines are made in North American assembly lines.
