Space-based vehicles have always been iconic and important aspects of the Star Wars saga. For example, the Millennium Falcon is set to be featured prominently in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Storywhich will explain how the eponymous smuggler obtained the “fastest ship in the galaxy.”

Yet, it often feels like the exciting space battles featured in a galaxy far, far away take a back set to the struggle between the Light Side and Dark Side of the Force. Outside of various books and video games, the skilled pilots of Star Wars fame haven’t always gotten to take center stage in the interstellar story that unfolds.

That’s all about to change, as the various vehicles and pilots of the Star Wars universe will be the primary focus of the newly-announced animated series: Star Wars Resistance.

Star Wars Resistance is the brainchild of Dave Filoni. Star Wars fans will know Filoni as the creator of past television series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, which ended earlier this year.

Filoni has an extensive team of executive producers to help him along the way. This lineup includes Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Star Wars newcomer Brandon Auman, best-known for his work with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The voice acting cast is equally as impressive, including Christopher Sean, Scott Lawrence, Myrna Valesco, Jim Rash, and Bobby Moynihan of SNL fame.

While Star Wars: The Clone Wars took place between Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Rebels primarily took place before A New Hope, Star Wars Resistance will take place during the “Sequel Era” of films. The events of the series will unfold in a time leading up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The central character of the series will be Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot who is recruited by the Resistance to investigate the growing power of the First Order. While Kazuda may be a brand-new character, don’t be surprised to see some familiar faces throughout the show.

Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie are already set to reprise their roles as Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, respectively. Furthermore, beloved astromech droid BB-8 will be rolling in from time to time throughout the show.

For Filoni, the inspiration behind Star Wars Resistance was one of a personal nature.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” explains Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me.”

Expect to see plenty of X-Wings engaging in dogfights during the course of the series

Unlike Filoni’s previous two Star Wars shows, which utilized CGI animation, the art style of Star Wars Resistance will be inspired by anime. This will give the show an aesthetic that pairs nicely with its sense of high-speed excitement.

Star Wars Resistance is set to premiere this fall on Disney Channel. The new series should provide fans with plenty of exciting new stories during the year-and-a-half hiatus between Solo: A Star Wars Story and the yet-unnamed Star Wars: Episode IX.
