Update #1: Ryan Tuerck’s Ferrari-Powered Toyota 86

Ferrari 458 Engine in Toyota 86

Last month, we brought you the news that professional drifter Ryan Tuerck was working on a crazy project to put a Ferrari F136 V8 engine (the same one in the 458 Italia) in a Toyota 86, the successor to the Scion FR-S in the United States.

Since then, Tuerck has shared a video update of how that’s going—and as you might imagine, squeezing a large Italian supercar engine in a small Japanese sports car hasn’t been easy.

The hardest part of the job so far has been to fit the V8 in the compact engine compartment of the Toyota 86. The V8 is taller and longer than the 2.0-liter four-cylinder that normally resides there, which means that for now, Tuerck and Gumout—the performance group working on the project with him—has been busier cutting down the car than building it up.

One key fact Tuerck revealed is that the Gumout 4586 (what they’re calling the car until they come up with a better name) won’t be a competition vehicle, which means there are no rulebooks dictating what modifications they can make to it. That will facilitate finding workarounds to the problems they will inevitably run into and should also make the final product even more extreme (if you can imagine it).

That being said, if it won’t be used for competition, it does make us wonder how or where we’ll see the Gumout 4586 in action. It certainly won’t be road legal, so Tuerck might be limited to showing it off for closed-course drifting action like he did with the Scion FR-S he previously tuned. We’re also hoping for a few drag races.

In the meantime, check out the update video below to see the project’s progress.
