Ford’s total vehicle sales in the United States were down 8.4% in August as the automaker moved a total of 214,482 vehicles. Sales of Ford-branded vehicles accounted for 205,239 of those sales, reflecting a 9% year-over-year decrease from the 225,601 Ford vehicles delivered in August 2015.

Despite the down month overall, Ford took encouragement from a 13% increase in the sales of vans, led by a 16.9% year-over-year increase from the Ford Transit.

“Vans continue to be a bright spot for Ford—a consistent growth story for us this year,” said Mark LaNeve, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.

Ford Transit sales totaled 11,993 units in August, up from the 10,263 units delivered in August 2015. The month’s sales were enough to bring the Transit across the six-figure threshold, pushing totals to 101,808 deliveries through eight months and giving it a 34.1% increase over sales through August of last year.

Also contributing to strong van sales was the E-Series, which was up 23.4% at 4,716 units. Transit Connect sales were down 8.7% at 3,646 units.

Also continuing to put up strong numbers for Ford were its two Police Interceptor vehicles. The Police Interceptor Sedan was up 46.4% at 883 units, and the Police Interceptor Utility was up 33.4% at 2,686 units.

Sales of Ford cars were down 26.5% overall, sales of SUVs were down 1.9%, and trucks were down 1.6% despite the uptick in van sales and a strong month from heavy trucks.

Through August, Ford’s US sales total 1,712,371 units, up 1.6%.
