Vauxhall Scrappage Scheme

Do you remember the popular Car Allowance Rebate System from 2009? You might remember it better as the “Cash for Clunkers” program. Old, yet drivable, cars that were inefficient were eligible for $3,500 or $4,500 credit towards the purchase of a new car. The program was implemented to help get gas guzzling cars off the street and help give a healthy kick to flagging auto sales during the recession. The UK had a similar program in 2009, and it was called a “vehicle scrappage scheme”.

If you haven’t heard, Europe’s economy is slowing down, and it’s impacting car sales. To help encourage shoppers to buy new cars, GM subsidiary Vauxhall is starting its own “Cash For Clunkers” program. From now until mid-December, customers can bring their car into the dealership and exchange it for £2,000 towards any Vauxhall passenger car, which includes the Viva, Corsa, Astra and Adam.

There are some conditions, of course. The car has to be more than 10 years old (but there is no maximum age), and the car must be owned by the customer for more than 90 days. Unfortunately that means a UK resident can’t go pay £500 for the ultimate clunker and exchange it for more money towards a car. It will be interesting to see how many old cars Vauxhall has on its hands to recycle come December.
