Although he will probably one day be known to an entire generation simply as “one of those guys from The Tonight Show band,” Roots founder and frontman Black Thought does still possess quite a bit of hip hop credibility.

Black Thought proved he still has what it takes recently when he rocked the mic at the 16 Bars Live event in New York City, presented by Honda.

“Yo, who your top five? / Jay [Z], Biggie, Pac, Nas / I ain’t trying to hear another name if it’s not mine / any side talk, I’mma consider it shots fired,” Black Thought spits in a video (below) posted to YouTube by The Boombox. (Personally, we consider the top five greatest rappers of all time to be Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan and Dylan, because he spits hot fire).

The brief video also includes a short interview with Rob Markman of MTV News, who touts Black Thought as “the quintessential M.C.”

Honda’s sponsorship of 16 Bars appears to be another way in which the automaker is trying to expose younger, trendier customers to its new Fit. Only time will tell whether Black Thought’s lyrical content seems more or less “hip” to the 20-something demographic than those omnipresent ads featuring a vaguely unsettling hipster spokesman.

As a side note, The Boombox also has a supercut of Kanye West spazzing out, which is pretty enjoyable, if you enjoy that kind of thing. There is also a video in which Nicki Minaj teaches you how to twerk, but nobody enjoys that kind of thing.
