Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle argued in his Nicomachean Ethics that to discover the human good we must identify the function of a human being. The Ford Motor Company has seemingly taken that philosophy and applied it to the production of the new Ford GT, by stating in a new video that the function of the 2016 GT is to win the 24 Hours Of Le Mans.

“We have a cult like following with this car,” said Dave Pericak, Director of Ford Performance. “To bring it back, not just bring it back into production, but to bring it back to Le Mans is going to mean a lot to the racing world.”

For those who don’t already know, the 24 Hours Of Le Mans is a legendary endurance race held in the town of Le Mans, France. The race’s storied history dates all the way back to 1923. Porsche has the most wins in the Le Mans race with 17 and this race has also featured legendary drivers such as Mario Andretti, Steve McQueen, and Bob Wolleck.

A near $400,000 price tag is the expected cost to own a new GT equipped with a twin-turbo V6 engine capable of more than 600 horsepower. You will have to pass an application process just to be allowed to purchase one of these exclusive vehicles. Ford has only built 250 of these supercars and just 100 GTs have been allocated to the United States.

Ford’s return to competition at the 2016 24 Hours Of Le Mans will mark the 50th anniversary of the Ford GT’s 1-2-3 finish at the 1966 event.
