It’s a big deal that Hyundai was the first automaker to launch Android Auto last month. This new feature aims to reduce driver distraction by greater smartphone integration.

This free software is now available for non-hybrid 2015 Hyundai Sonatas with Navigation. You can install it yourself (if you don’t feel like taking it to a local Hyundai dealership) by following the directions below. Once other Hyundai models become Android Auto-integrated, these directions will probably apply for those too.

If you prefer not to read the instructions, just watch the convenient video narrated by Paul Rudd below.

Instructions for Installing Android Auto in Your 2015 Sonata

Obtaining Software: Log onto your personal computer and access MyHyundai. Create an account or sign in if you already have one. Look for mentions of Android Auto on the home screen and click the “Download Android Auto Update” button after agreeing to the terms and conditions.

Insert a USB flash drive stick into your computer with at least 1 GB of free space that’s either FAT16 or FAT32 formatted. Your software should be done downloading; run the file you’ve downloaded by opening it. That should transfer the files to your USB drive.

Installing in Car: Take your car somewhere with open ventilation and roll down your windows–it will take about 60 minutes to install the new software. Start your car but leave it in “Park.” Insert your USB drive stick into the USB outlet in your car. Press the Setup button on the dashboard, then the System Info icon on the infotainment screen. Confirm your update.

As you’re waiting 40 minutes for the software to install, keep an eye out for error codes until you see a confirmation screen. Once you’ve checked that Android Auto has successfully installed, remove the USB drive.

Installing on Phone: Connect your phone to your Sonata via USB cable and download the Android Auto app when prompted. Go back to your car’s infotainment console and press Setup, then Connectivity, then turn on the connectivity. Hit the “Home” icon and you’re ready!

Now you can give your Hyundai Sonata all kinds of voice commands!
