Camaro 50th Anniversary 1967 Chevy Camaro to 2017 Camaro

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Camaro, and Chevrolet is going all out to celebrate the special occasion.

In addition to its special 2017 Chevy Camaro 50th Anniversary Edition model, the automaker has a variety of events planned this summer to commemorate the muscle car’s golden anniversary.

Chevrolet has also been wishing the Camaro a “happy birthday” on social media, with excellent tribute videos like the one below.

The video is entitled “Language,” which is appropriate, since it illustrates how both the car’s design language has changed over the years, and how the marketing language used to describe the vehicle has morphed during that same time period.

For example, when the Camaro first debuted in 1966, Chevy execs defined the word “Camaro” as meaning “a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs.”

But for the first-ever Camaro commercial, Chevy portrayed the 1967 SS model as a “fiery new creation” that was literally erupting from an active volcano:

But by the time the second-generation Camaro debuted in 1970, the bowtie brand had come up with a new nickname for the sports car: the “Super Hugger.” As mentioned in the video, it’s because of the way the Camaro hugged the road.

The second-gen Camaro was produced from 1970 to 1981, during which time Chevy also introduced the luxury-oriented 1979 Berlinetta model (which the voiceover guy describes as “a new way to take your pulse.”)

These vintage Camaro ads are especially fun reminders of how much the Camaro’s look (and advertising) has changed over the last half of a century.
