Vin Diesel, behind the wheel

This week has certainly been a week of bold predictions. First, Canadian-born Ted Cruz announced himself as first man to unsuccessfully throw his hat into the 2016 Presidential race—a move that he supported deftly by failing to secure ownership of tedcruz.com. Then, the Fresno Grizzlies announced “the boldest promotion in the history of sports” by proclaiming that its August 15th home game would be “Back to the Future” night. During this game, the team was set to give away 2017 World Series replica rings identifying their MLB affiliates—the Houston Astros—as champions.  The Grizzlies eventually reneged on their promise, fearing that they might “jinx” a team that finished the 2014 season with one of the worst records in baseball.

But out of all the bold predictions made this week—from awful politicians to awful baseball teams—we are inclined to say that Vin Diesel’s proclamation that Furious 7 will win the Academy Award for Best Picture has the best chance of coming to pass.

From Variety:

“Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with this movie,” Diesel said in a lengthy interview with Variety for this week’s cover story. “It will probably win best picture at the Oscars, unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever.”

Diesel took a breath, before offering his prediction for a second time. “This will win best picture,” Diesel said. “There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing.”

Granted, Fast 7 looks awesome, and it’s already getting rave reviews from critics and pre-viewers alike. The once-silly franchise has gotten progressively sillier in its latest installments—but it’s also somehow gotten leaner, meaner, and more fun.

It will also likely be an emotionally-charged affair for fans of the franchise given that it will mark the final appearance of Paul Walker, who passed away in 2013.

Will Furious 7 win Best Picture at the Oscars next year? Very unlikely, but not nearly as unlikely as a guy from Calgary being elected President of the United States or Colby Rasmus hoisting the World Series Most Valuable Player Award.
