Volkswagen Beetle Classic Goes On Sale
Becomes Least Expensive Bug In VW's Lineup
The Volkswagen Beetle Classic goes on sale this week, with a starting price of $20,195. Roughly $1,500 less than the Beetle 1.8T automatic, this retro 1.8T Coupe is now the cheapest option in the the current Beetle lineup.
As you can see, the Classic model has a familiar vintage look to it, although it’s available only in Pure White, Black Uni, and Reflex Silver, which seems like a missed opportunity (where are those garish shades of green we all have such fond memories of?). Inside, the cabin features cool-looking two-tone brown “Sioux” leatherette and checked cloth seats. There is also a multifunction steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shifter knob and handbrake lever, satellite radio, and a navigation system.
Also standard are 17-inch “Heritage” aluminum-alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and a six-speed automatic transmission (no manual option, which also seems to contradict the “Classic” moniker).
Like other VW bugs, the Classic features a 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI® four-cylinder engine, which produces 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque
If you want to feel the wind in your hair, you’ll have to wait until the Beetle Classic Convertible is made available in early 2015. The Convertible has the same exterior and interior as the Coupe, the same engine, and very similar EPA estimated highway fuel economy ratings (the Coupe manages 33 mpg with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the Convertible achieves 32 mpg). The main difference between the two models (well, aside from the fact that one is a convertible), is the price: when it goes on sale early next year, the Volkswagen Beetle Classic Convertible will start at $25,995.
