Volkswagen BUDD-e Named Concept Truck of the Year

The Volkswagen BUDD-e, an electric concept car unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show this past January, was applauded for its look into the future of electric car design. Now it is being officially recognized, as it won the 2016 Concept Truck of the Year award at the 15th Annual North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards.

VW fans were happy to see the resemblance the BUDD-e concept had to the famous VW Bus, with its boxy shape. While the vehicle might look like a classic, it’s Volkswagen’s first vehicle built on the automaker’s Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB), and features a 101 kWh battery with an estimated range of up to 233 miles. On the inside, the car has several features that help it to communicate with smart homes, and is loaded with the latest and greatest in infotainment design. Lastly, gesture control was added to help keep a driver’s attention on the road, instead of on using vehicle controls.

The North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards are decided upon by a jury of more than two dozen individuals. To be considered for an award, the concept must have been unveiled in North America at the Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, or New York Auto Shows of this season. Four categories were also designated for awards: “Most Significant Concept Vehicle,” “Concept Car,” “Production Preview Vehicle,” and “Concept Truck”. Twenty concept cars were eligible this year for awards, with the VW BUDD-e beating three other category finalists.

Dr Hendrik Muth, Director of Product Marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc., accepted the award and said “We are thrilled that the BUDD-e has been honored as 2016 Concept Truck of the Year and would like to thank the panel of judges for recognizing Volkswagen’s innovation. We are determined to lead the future of automotive design, and BUDD-e shows the capabilities of our all-new electric vehicle architecture and further advances connectivity and infotainment.”
