Volkswagen Sport Coupe GTE Concept Debuts in Geneva
The new Volkswagen Sport Coupe GTE concept has debuted at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, offering a glimpse at the future of the VW lineup—both in terms of design elements and increasing hybridization.
A coupe with four doors and a hatchback built on the same modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform as the Golf, the Sport Coupe GTE (should it reach production) would reportedly slot in below the Phaeton and above the Passat.
The vehicle is powered by a 3.0-liter plug-in hybrid TSI V6 direct-injection engine and two electric motors, which combine for 374 horsepower. In GTE mode, the coupe can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5 seconds flat, and reach a top speed of 155 mph.
It’s a standard hybrid, which charges the battery via regenerative braking and automatically uses the V6 or the electric motor depending on the driving situation. However, when the “E-mode” button is pushed, the coupe is propelled solely by the 114 hp electric motor at the rear axle. Its electric range is 32 miles, and its total range is 745.
What makes this particular concept so interesting, though, is not the vehicle itself, per se, but what it represents—namely, the new look of Volkswagen. Design head, Walter de Silva, says this concept’s design language will be “shaping the immediate future” for VW vehicles.
So get a good look—and if you like what you see, you may want to start saving up for Volkswagen’s future lineup.
