Volkswagen to Enter Mountain Race with Electric Car
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), a famous and challenging race in the Colorado mountains slated for June 24, 2018, will have a surprising competitor courtesy of Volkswagen. Volkswagen announced that it is throwing an all-new electric race car into the ring, er, on the racetrack.

According to VW Media, “The all-wheel-drive prototype’s goal is to set a new record for electric cars at the finish line, 14,000 feet above sea level. The new motorsport project is part of Volkswagen’s process of transforming itself into the leading producer of electric vehicles. By 2025, the Volkswagen brand will already offer 23 all-electric models.”
According to PPIHC.com, the Broadmoor PPIHC began in 1916 by The Broadmoor Hotel founder Spencer Penrose. Penrose also founded the El Pomar Foundation and the Pikes Peak Highway. The “Race to the Clouds” is supported by Gran Turismo and challenges motorcyclists and vehicle drivers to take on the “terrifying and merciless route” to the summit of Pikes Peak, an extremely popular spot in Colorado.
“The Broadmoor PPIHC takes place on a 12.42 mile (19.99 km) public toll-road boasting 156 turns, while competitors climb 4,720 feet (1,440 meters) from the 9,390 feet (2,862 meters) Start Line at Mile 7 marker on the Pikes Peak Highway to the 14,115 feet (4,300 meters) Finish Line at the mountain’s summit. As the drivers climb toward the summit, the thin air slows reflexes and saps competitor’s mental and muscle strength in addition to robbing internal combustion engines of up to 30% of the power they are capable of at the Start Line. Competitors and vehicles must be in top shape and condition simply to finish, let alone win,” states PPIHC.com.
