Volvo Adds 1,300 Jobs at Torslanda Plant
Volvo generated a ton of interest with the full reveal of its all-new XC90, and it is taking every precaution to make sure that supply meets demand when the new SUV rolls off production lines. It was announced Thursday that Volvo will add a third shift and about 1,300 jobs to the Torslanda plant where the 2015 XC90 will be manufactured in order to adequately prepare for launch.
The agreement to expand the plant in Torslanda, Gothenburg will boost the number of employees to 4,600 when it is fully implemented. The addition of a third shift will begin sometime in the first quarter of 2015.
Currently, the Torslanda plant has an annual production output of 300,000 vehicles. The factory is currently responsible for production of the S60, S80, V60, C70, and XC70.
Production of the previous-gen XC90 ended on July 11 of this year in order to make way for production of the 2015 model—the first Volvo vehicle built on the company’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform under the guidance of Geely.
In addition to 1,300 new jobs and a third shift, the Torslanda plant agreement will pave the way for a working agreement to support higher production volumes down the line through better production flexibility.
Through the first three quarters of 2014, Volvo’s global deliveries are up 9% with total sales of 339,200. Volvo has stated that it aims to sell 800,000 vehicles on an annual basis by no later than 2020.
