Volvo has received yet another industry award, this time winning the Brand Design Language Award for 2016

Is there any award that Volvo hasn’t won?

The second-generation Volvo XC90 has been so well received that it’s already won the North American Truck of the Year Award, Yahoo Autos Ride of the Year, and the Motor Trend SUV of the Year Award, but the trophies don’t end there for the Swedish automaker, as Volvo recently earned the Brand Design Language Award for 2016.

The Car Design Awards were reborn in 2016 and formerly were some of the most prestigious awards given in regards to automotive design. Editors and representatives from various automotive and design magazines made up the jury which voted for each award winner. All together, there were three categories: Production Car, Concept Car, and Brand Design Language.

“We are proud to receive this recognition for the design work we have done in the last years,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design, Volvo Car Group. “When we started work on the XC90 we knew that we had an opportunity to take the Volvo Cars brand in a new direction.”

The XC90 SUV is the vehicle that’s mostly responsible for Volvo winning this award. The new XC90 is also the first Volvo model to use its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). This automobile platform offers enhanced protection in worst-case scenarios. In addition, the new S90 sedan and V90 wagon also make use of the SPA platform.

“The Volvo family contains many different characters – the strong and refined types, the elegant and sophisticated, the dynamic and the youthful. What we have done with the brand design at Volvo is to provide room for each of these characters, these expressions, to shine through while still paying homage to our tremendous heritage,” added Ingenlath. “Each car we design is unmistakably a Volvo, but it also has a unique personality.”

Volvo’s competition for the Brand Design Language Award included Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, and Jaguar.
