Volvo Inflatable Child Seat Concept Does Away with Bulk, Weight
Volvo’s new Inflatable Child Seat Concept
In a video published earlier this morning, Volvo asks us to consider all the designs we take for granted. Perhaps there are improvements, replacements, slight alterations that can be made to the designs we accept as fully developed in our world today. One such design posed by the Swedish automaker is the child safety seat. The brand seeks to revolutionize this particular design with the all-new Inflatable Child Seat Concept.
The Inflatable Child Seat Concept is incredibly lightweight and, of course, inflatable. The rearward-faced safety seat utilizes novel technology to inflate in less than 40 seconds. Check it out in the video below:

“For me child safety is always the number one priority and when we lived abroad with two toddlers we had to haul bulky child seats through airports and then into taxis,” explained Lawrence Abele, Design Manager at the Volvo Monitoring and Concept Center in LA and the designer behind the Inflatable Child Seat Concept. “For many, traveling with young children is a challenge; any assistance to simplify the parents’ life with young children is a great thing.”
The convenience of the new seat concept is incredible. Now friends and grandparents will be able to easily install the safety seat in their own cars when babysitting, and traveling in rental cars and taxis when out of town will be much simpler for parents.
Some of the impressive specifications for the Inflatable Child Seat Concept include the following:
- 40 seconds or less inflation time
- Total weight less than 5 kg
- Bluetooth enabling, which allows for remote controlled inflation
- Rearward facing for optimal safety
- Drop-stitch fabrics that can withstand high internal pressure (used in boats and developed by the military to create inflatable airplanes)
Parents can choose inserts to the Inflatable Child Seat Concept in different textiles and colors to make the seat more unique.
The safety seat fits easily into a small bag, reducing bulk and weight for the parent tasked with the responsibility of carrying the seat from A to B. No word yet from Volvo on when this concept might become a reality, but, as it comes from Volvo, you can expect it to be the safest on the market.
